Catching up with old friends in Punmu

We love catching up with old friends who have attended our programs over the years.

In 2022 Stirling Flatt was a regular attendee at Fair Game’s afterschool Game On! sessions in South Hedland. Having displayed excellent teamwork and leadership skills in the sessions, Fair Game’s Project Officer recommended him to Ngurra Kujungka as someone with great potential to be a Recreation Officer. Stirling was soon endorsed and working for Ngurra Kujungka as a trainee. Jump forward three years and CEO Nicki Bardwell was delighted to catch up with Stirling in July when she attended the Martu Festival in Punmu.

Stirling is now a Senior Recreation Officer for Ngurra Kujungka, running a variety of sports programs for the Western Desert Martu people in Hedland. Coming from Punmu originally, Stirling was playing footy for his home team, in between carrying out work duties as one of Ngurra Kujungka’s organising crew for the Festival.

The Festival brings together Martu communities of the Western Desert who travel great distances to take part in a fantastic celebration of sport, music and culture. Fair Game is well known to these communities having delivered programs to them for many years, so the festival represents a great way to connect and strengthen our relationships.

Fair Game’s Equip for Sport program coordinator and all round legend, Mary Brown, accompanied Nicki to the Martu Festival. Mary, a keen player of softball, helped the team from Softball WA to score and umpire games while Nicki helped out with the footy competition.
