Traditional health promotion often falls short in remote communities - especially where English is a second or third language and up to 90% of youth experience middle-ear hearing challenges.
At Fair Game we address this with our 6 Rs Integrated Delivery Model. Our gamified approach combines inclusive fitness, interactive health education, and the donation of pre-loved sports equipment to drive real behavioural change.
Here is how the framework works on the ground:
Rapport: We open with inclusive, low skill fitness games led by our young adult peer-mentors to engage participants quickly. By joining in the games, rather than coaching from the sidelines, our teams quickly break down social barriers, build trust, and create an energetic environment where kids feel confident to participate.
Relate: We naturally segue between fitness games and health promotion activities so the messaging is relatable. For example, after high-energy games, we might lead into a Healthy Lungs session while the kids are feeling breathless and have fast-moving chests, providing a seamless transition into discussing lung health.
Root: We introduce foundational health literacy (covering hygiene, nutrition, ear health, and smoking/vaping prevention) using tactile tools rather than lectures - like breathing through straws and thin tubed pasta to physically demonstrate lung damage.
Reinforce: Educational messaging is reinforced through active games, such as food-group relay races where teams compete to build balanced meals.
(W)rap it up: Cool-down activities solidify the lesson, like drawing a healthy meal on a paper plate to take home.
Review: We close with interactive gamified quizzes to evaluate recall and consolidate learning.
THE POWER OF THE 7TH R.
Repeat: True impact relies on continuity. By returning to communities year after year, we build deep generational trust.
In 2025 alone, our program reached over 8,000 participants across 35 remote communities (of which 76% have partnered with us for over a decade). Data shows that repeat visits increase baseline knowledge retention with pre session knowledge increasing from 30% on visit one to 70% by visit three, turning short-term learning into lifelong habits.
To sustain these healthy behaviours after our team leaves, we provide targeted sports equipment donations. This equipment is either delivered by the team during visits or transported for free, by CTI Logistics Limited, if requested between visits.
We’ve seen firsthand how gamifying education breaks down severe barriers to health literacy.
